USA Today reported the results of its Readers’ Choice Awards, identifying the 10 best college marching bands in the U.S. based on nominations from an expert panel and votes from readers. The selection highlights groups recognized for musical excellence, visual flair, and their ability to energize crowds during game days.
Ensemble sizes vary significantly among the honorees. The Ohio University Marching 110 features 255 members, retaining the number from its original 1923 founding. In contrast, the James Madison University Marching Royal Dukes has boasted a membership exceeding 500 since 2017. Western Carolina University distinguishes itself as the “World’s Largest Funk-rock Band,” incorporating electric guitars and pop tunes into its performances.
Traditions and rigorous standards define many of these programs. At Ohio State University, only fourth-year members may play the sousaphone to dot the “i” in formations. Auburn University’s band includes 380 members, fewer than a quarter of whom are music majors. Southern University’s “Human Jukebox” is praised for combining great music with incredible presence, while Penn State’s Blue Band celebrates a history spanning more than a century. The University of Minnesota requires participants to attend a 10-day intensive “Spat Camp” before engaging in weekly rehearsals.
