UW-Eau Claire Marching Band selected for macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s Blugold Marching Band has been selected to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City in 2027, marking the ensemble’s first appearance in the event. Volume One reported that faculty announced the achievement to students live at rehearsal on Sept. 30, 2026.

Director of Athletic Bands Kara Metzger, who assumed the position in 2025 and is a university alumna and former band member, said the application-based selection was kept confidential to avoid disappointing the 395 student performers. Chancellor Edwin Martini called the selection the largest stage the band will ever perform on.

Students who graduate before fall 2027 will be ineligible to perform since they will no longer be enrolled in the ensemble. Metzger said some students are considering additional minors or certificates to extend their enrollment. Clarinet player Serenity Brand, an elementary education and Latin American studies student on track to graduate this spring, said the opportunity still feels like a win.

Metzger noted the marching band and music education programs share strong ties, fostering a supportive environment. The band rehearses as an academic course Tuesday through Friday, with additional practice expected outside class. For the 2027 season, the ensemble will prepare a field show alongside parade-specific performances.
