Vienna workshop gathers European educators to advance early childhood music education

More than 50 experts from across Europe gathered at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna on September 22 and 23 for a workshop aimed at strengthening early childhood music education. The European Music School Union reported that participants included music school educators, teacher educators and music school directors who compared approaches and exchanged experiences over two days.

The workshop, part of the CC-ECME project, ran as two parallel sessions. One focused on designing a modular seminar for professionals in early childhood music education, led by Luc Nijs of the University of Luxembourg and Michael Dartsch of Hochschule für Musik Saar. Participants contributed their own expertise to shape a modular learning format for educators in the field.

A second stakeholder workshop addressed co-developing policy recommendations, led by Taru Koivisto and Heidi Westerlund of the University of the Arts Helsinki and Margaret Barrett of Monash University. Both workshops drew on earlier research and the project’s mapping of early childhood music education across Europe.

The European Music School Union reported that the workshop reflected the CC-ECME project’s goals of promoting collaborative teaching, driving institutional change and growing the network across Europe. Participants helped shape tools, recommendations and connections to carry the field forward.
