The Virginia State University Trojan Explosion Marching Band has reached a historic enrollment milestone, growing to more than 200 members for the 2026 season. HBCU Gameday reported that this record-setting roster makes it the largest marching band in the university’s history and the biggest ensemble within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
Director Dr. Taylor Whitehead attributed the expansion to the program’s dedication and increased visibility on major national stages. The ensemble’s reputation has been bolstered by consecutive runner-up finishes in the Red Lobster Band of the Year competition and a current No. 1 ranking in the HBCU Division II Band Media Poll. Students have recently performed at the White House and appeared on national television broadcasts.
The growth includes specific sections like the tuba line reaching a school-record 20 musicians. The expanded ensemble will travel extensively this fall, scheduling appearances across six states including Georgia, South Carolina, and New York. These tours combine football game performances with battle of the bands events and high school visits, serving as recruitment appearances. The band is set to perform at an upcoming matchup against South Carolina State University, further highlighting its elevated profile in collegiate marching arts.
