Pasmae reported that the 2026 Annual Virtual Wind Band Workshop convened 512 participants from 13 countries across Africa, as well as Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. Held virtually from April 27 to 29, 2026, the event was organized through a partnership between the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana; the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan, USA; and the Pan-African Society for Musical Arts Education (PASMAE).
The workshop focused on three core areas: teaching individual instruments, conducting and gesture, and music notation software. Conveners included Dr. John Doe Dordzro of the University of Cape Coast, alongside Dr. Richard Frey and Dr. John D. Pasquale from the University of Michigan. They were joined by facilitators such as Barry Houser of the University of Illinois and Detrich Morrison-Jones of Columbus North High School.
Participants, ranging from choir directors to bandmasters, praised the sessions for offering practical strategies applicable to classroom instruction and ensemble leadership. The virtual format allowed attendees to overcome geographical barriers while engaging with expert-led demonstrations. Feedback highlighted the value of hands-on learning regarding instrumental technique and conducting patterns. Many respondents expressed interest in future topics including composition, ear training, and ensemble management, underscoring the growing demand for sustained professional development in musical arts education.
