Pasmae reported that the 2026 edition of the Annual Virtual Wind Band Workshop convened 512 music educators, students, and conductors from 13 countries across Africa, alongside participants from Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates. Held virtually from April 27 to 29, 2026, the event was organized through a partnership between the Department of Music and Dance at the University of Cape Coast, the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at the University of Michigan, and the Pan-African Society for Musical Arts Education (PASMAE).
The curriculum focused on three critical areas: teaching individual instruments, conducting and gesture, and music notation software. According to Pasmae, participants ranging from school band directors to choir leaders praised the sessions for their immediate practical value. Educators noted improved confidence in teaching brass and woodwind techniques, while others highlighted new strategies for rehearsing ensembles and creating instructional materials using notation tools.
The virtual format removed geographical barriers, allowing diverse practitioners to engage with expert facilitators on topics like triangular conducting patterns and embouchure formation. Attendees expressed strong interest in future expansions covering harmony, composition, and African music notation. This growing international community underscores the need for accessible, high-quality pedagogical resources to support developing instrumental programs in schools and communities throughout the region.
