Virginia State University reported that the Trojan Explosion Marching Band has exceeded 200 members for the 2026 season, establishing a new enrollment record in the institution’s history. This growth makes it the largest marching band within the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association and the largest in university history. The roster now includes students from across the country, strengthening the group’s position as a premier collegiate ensemble.
The milestone follows years of national exposure, including performances at the White House, appearances on NBC’s TODAY Show, multiple No. 1 ESPN Division II band rankings, and two competitions in the ESPN Band of the Year National Championship. Dr. Taylor Whitehead, director of the Trojan Explosion, credited the expansion to the hard work of the program, noting that students have performed on major stages while representing the university. Whitehead stated the growth reflects the commitment of students and staff alongside the reputation built nationwide.
The university stated that specific sections have also reached historic sizes, including a 20-member tuba section. This fall, the enlarged ensemble will continue its national tour with performances throughout Virginia and North Carolina, as well as appearances in Orangeburg, South Carolina; Savannah, Georgia; Rochester, New York; Dover, Delaware; and College Park, Maryland. The schedule includes football games, battle of the bands showcases and recruitment events designed to introduce future students to the university.
