The National Association of Music Merchants recently warned that tariffs could cause a 27% decline in wind instrument imports, disproportionately affecting entry-level student models. Petroff and Sercombe noted that while student interest is growing, with last year’s fifth-grade orchestra being the largest on record, more families struggle to afford necessary gear. About 180 students have signed up for sixth-grade band. The educators emphasized that music instruction should not be treated as a luxury.
The collection event will occur next week during school open houses at Waunakee Intermediate School. A representative from Ward-Brodt Music will provide appraisals and tax receipts for donations. The teachers stated they will accept instruments in any condition, as damaged items can be refurbished or recycled. Having personal instruments allows students to practice at home and develop a deeper connection with their equipment, which is vital for musical growth. Donated instruments aim to remove financial barriers for students qualifying for free or reduced lunch programs.
