Student musicians from across west-central Nebraska are set to perform in downtown Kearney this weekend for the 67th annual UNK Band Day Parade. knopnews2.com reported that the University of Nebraska at Kearney confirmed 32 middle and high school programs will join the university’s Pride of the Plains Marching Band for the Saturday morning event.
Local ensembles from North Platte, Cozad Middle School, and Ogallala Middle School are scheduled to participate in the lineup. Organizers stated the procession begins at 21st Street and Third Avenue, traveling through downtown before concluding near 24th Street and Central Avenue. This tradition, dating back to the 1950s, functions as both a community celebration and vital preparation for students entering the fall competitive season.
The university noted that trophies will be awarded to the top three bands in each class, along with honors for outstanding drum lines and color guards. Following the parade, student performers have the opportunity to attend the 10th annual Bearcat Marching Festival at Kearney High School. During this session, clinicians provide direct feedback on field shows to help ensembles refine their performances ahead of formal autumn competitions, including the upcoming Harvest of Harmony event in Grand Island.
