Williamstown Independent Schools has hired Lian Rivera as the new junior/senior high choral director, pmg-ky3.com reported. Rivera replaces Tonya Fox, who retired after many years in the position.
In addition to directing the choir, Rivera will also teach a piano class for high school students. Prior to joining Williamstown, she spent five months at Great Crossing High School, where she led 10 students to the KMEA All-State Choir Conference, had the choir perform at the Sweet 16 basketball championship game, and received a distinguished rating at the KMEA spring Performance Assessment, according to pmg-ky3.com.
Rivera said she chose Williamstown because of the welcoming atmosphere and emphasized the importance of building a supportive community within the choir program, pmg-ky3.com reported. She stated her teaching philosophy prioritizes students’ personal growth and relationships over solely focusing on musical performance.
Rivera plans to explore new musical styles, encourage student individuality, and foster a strong choir community, pmg-ky3.com reported. She also hopes to establish new school traditions, including participation in the Bluegrass Choir Music Festival and a revival of the middle and high school talent show, according to pmg-ky3.com.
