Yale School of Music redesigns Artist Diploma program

Yale School of Music has announced a redesigned Artist Diploma program that will expand training for solo performers and add a dedicated track for string quartets, according to The Violin Channel.

The two-year program, launching in the 2027-28 academic year, assigns each student a three-member advisory committee that guides course selection and oversees progress. Candidates will also develop a professional portfolio including an artist statement, business plan, professional recordings, and evidence of public performance and professional communication.

The new string quartet track will be mentored by the Brentano String Quartet, Yale’s quartet-in-residence, and includes a Chamber Coaching Practicum providing hands-on experience in music pedagogy. The track complements Yale’s existing String Quartet Fellowship, previously held by the Terra String Quartet, Callisto Quartet, and Omer Quartet.

Dean José García-León said the program was reimagined around each student, with a dedicated advisory committee, a seminar spanning both years, and a portfolio showing what kind of artist they intend to be. Percussion faculty member Robert van Sice, an AD program co-director, said budding soloists needed to learn the business side of a career path, noting he was business-naive when starting his own solo career four decades ago. Flute faculty member Tara O’Connor, also an AD program co-director, said every artist arrives with different strengths, ambitions, and questions.
