Texas Public Radio | TPR reported that the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio is sponsoring the YOSA Music College Fair, an event designed to connect student musicians with representatives from colleges and music programs. The gathering allows young performers to explore their options and consider where they can continue to grow artistically while evaluating future career paths.
Jerrod Price told Texas Public Radio | TPR that YOSA serves over 600 kids in its season-long program across 11 different ensembles, including string and full orchestras, a wind ensemble, a mariachi group, and a choir. While the organization trains young people to be the best musicians they can be, Price noted that only about one-third of participants plan to study music in college. About two-thirds go on to study other fields, with a vast majority of those entering STEM. The fair specifically supports those aspiring toward music education, performance, or therapy majors.
The event brings together local universities and elite national conservatories to speak directly with prospective students in San Antonio. Price indicated possibilities for change will be tangible at the event, reflecting the organization’s mission. The Music College Fair takes place Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 at TriPoint on North St. Mary’s Street at Highway 281.
