SBO sister publication, JAZZed is excited to announce that NEA Jazz Master (2011) and Grammy nominee David Liebman has come on board as editor of the magazine.

For nearly five decades, Liebman has been one of the most vital voices in jazz culture, playing with both the Miles Davis and Elvin Jones Groups, leading or co-leading groups on over 500 recorded works, and establishing himself as one of the most in-demand lecturers and authors. As founder and artistic director of the International Association of Schools of Jazz (IASJ) he’s helped connect institutes of learning from nearly 40 countries across the globe. In addition to the NEA honor and Grammy nomination (Best Jazz Solo, 1998), David Liebman has also been awarded the JEN Legends of Jazz distinction (2013), the Order of Arts and Letters (France 2009), the Jazz Journalist’s award for Soprano Saxophone (2007), and an Honorary Doctorate from the Sibelius Academy (Finland, 1997).

He now brings that wealth of experience and knowledge to JAZZed, further strengthening our commitment to serving jazz educators and scholars.

“Jazz education has come a long way since its beginnings,” Liebman observes. “JAZZedMagazine is now the head of the class and guardian of the pathway. I am excited to join the staff and contribute to its success and relevance.”

In addition to penning a monthly column for the magazine, David will also help guide the overall editorial focus, expand the scope of the magazine, and provide valuable insight into what content is most meaningful to instructors and students.

“Bringing on Liebman to work with executive editor Christian Wissmuller is part of my commitment as the new steward of the magazines to strengthen JAZZed’s education-focused roots.” says Mike Lawson, editor of SBO magazine and owner of artistpro, LLC, the parent company of JAZZed, SBO, Choral Director, Musical Merchandise Review, and the new Modern Band Journal magazines.

We are happy to welcome Dave Liebman to the JAZZed team.  Welcome aboard Dave!
