Kendor Music Publishing is thrilled to announce the second edition of The Jazz Educator’s Handbook by veteran jazz educators and composers Jeff Jarvis & Doug Beach. First published in 2002, The Jazz Educator’s Handbook is known as the most comprehensive yet accessible how-to handbook for jazz educators and band directors to build and maintain a successful jazz program.  An indispensable resource, The Jazz Educator’s Handbook is filled with field-tested strategies for both experienced jazz educators and band directors newly responsible for jazz programs.  In the new second edition, jazz education giants, Jarvis and Beach, have newly-revised and updated The Jazz Educator’s Handbook to make it even more accessible, streamlined and modernized, including with hundreds of print examples and downloadable recordings to carefully address everyday issues encountered by bands.

“Doug Beach and I co-authored the 1st edition of Jazz Educators Handbook to assist band directors with disparate levels of jazz experience,” says co-author Jeff Jarvis. “Since that time, educators around the world have used our suggestions to help their students learn and enjoy jazz music. But since the original publishing date of 2002, teaching strategies have been continually transformed by daily advances in music technology. What hasn’t changed is the human dynamic; jazz educators are still driven by passion for the music and the insatiable desire to teach. We hope the 2nd edition’s updated information, combined with your experience and instincts, will help jazz music to evolve for years to come.”

Topics addressed in The Jazz Educator’s Handbook include Starting an Instrumental Jazz Program, Recruiting/Retaining/Replacing Students, Instrumentation & Set-Up, Jazz Combos, Choosing Charts, Rehearsal Techniques, Improvisation, Festival Performances, Fundraising, Controlling Performance Anxiety, Making a Recording, among many more.

The new second edition of The Jazz Educator’s Handbook is now available for $55 (same price as first edition) from music retailers and from the publisher here.
