Kudos to the award winning documentary, The Girls In The Band, recently named by Jazzfuel as one of the “Ten Best Jazz Documentaries Ever” and included by Movieweb in their list of “50 Best Music Docs Of All Time.”

This uplifting film takes a look at the unknown contributions female instrumentalists have made to the jazz world, how they persevered, and the kind of encouragement and recognition they are now receiving. The film includes such jazz greats as Marian Mc Partland, Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Geri Allen, Terri Lyne Carrington, Patrice Rushen, and Dr. Billy Taylor, who gave this noteworthy comment on the film…”The importance of this work is to provide role models for young women in jazz, because If you can’t see it, you can’t be it.”

In addition to winning numerous film and music festival awards, the film has been seen worldwide and this past May was screened in a five-city tour of France accompanied by the filmmaker, Judy Chaikin, who reports:

“My greatest reward often comes after a screening when a professional male jazz player stops me to say ‘This was mind-blowing! I never knew anything about these great women jazz artists.”

The Girls In The Band tells an important story for both female and male musicians.

The film is available to educators and students on the KANOPY streaming website and has already been acquired by over three hundred educational institutions, including high schools, colleges and universities.
