The Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) is excited to announce two additions to the 2024–25 season. On January 19, At Last! A Tribute to Etta James will be presented at 3 p.m. in Orchestra Hall. Later in the year, Chris Thile: Attention! will take place on June 26 at 7:30 p.m. in Orchestra Hall.
Etta James was an American singer and songwriter that made significant contributions to music with hits like “At Last,” “Tell Mama,” and “I’d Rather Go Blind.” Known for her powerful and soulful voice, James was a multifaceted musician performing in many genres including R&B, gospel, jazz, and rock’ n’ roll. To celebrate her enduring legacy, the DSO will be joined by dynamic vocalist Crystal Monee Hall and a band featuring James’s sons Sametto and Donto James and her longtime friend and guitarist Josh Sklair. The personal connections these musicians have to the late James will guarantee a special and heartwarming performance. Tickets for this performance start at $29.
Chris Thile is a dynamic and energetic performer spanning genre gaps from bluegrass to Baroque to pop. His passion for his craft has earned him multiple Grammys®, a MacArthur “Genius” grant, hosting duties on Live From Here (formerly A Prairie Home Companion), and dozens of albums as a solo artist and as a member of bands like Nickel Creek and Punch Brothers. Thile is bringing his brand new work, ATTENTION! A narrative song cycle for extroverted mandolinist and orchestra to Orchestra Hall in late June. The performance will showcase Thile’s wide-ranging talents including storytelling, virtuosity, and songwriting. Tickets for this performance start at $39.
