In response to the teacher shortage, the TeachMusic Coalition was formed to help find resources and solutions to the immediate, short-term, and longer-term challenges facing the music educator workforce, working to retain, shepherd, and recruit the next generation of music educators.
This coalition is made up of many industry partners, including the American Choral Directors Association, the American String Teachers Association, Music for All, the National Association for Music Education, the National Federation of State High School Associations, the NAMM Foundation, and many others. SBO+, the leading music education magazine, is pleased to help them spread the word!
Their site, TeachMusic.org, provides reasons for becoming a music teacher, helpfully divided in pages for Students, Parents, Counselors, and Teachers. It also provides information on Alternate Licensure
There’s also a job board with open positions searchable by a variety of tools.
So, what does this mean to you? First, the “Why Teach Music” pages are short and to the point and can give you great talking points about why your job is important. Second, as teachers of music, WE are the most important “recruiters” for our profession, encouraging and mentoring young musicians to be the next generation of teachers.
Also, ensure your district’s vacancies are listed on the Job Board and share the site with students, parents, your colleagues, and guidance counselors.
