The Band Community Mourns the Passing of Dr. Stanley Michalski

The American Bandmasters Association mourns the passing of Dr. Stanley F. Michalski, Jr., Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Music and Conductor of Bands at Clarion University of Pennsylvania and Emeritus Conductor of the Winthrop University Carolina Wind Orchestra. A revered teacher, conductor, performer, clinician, and adjudicator, Stanley (Stan) Michalski shaped the wind band profession over many decades of devoted service throughout North America, Asia, and Europe.

Born in 1934, he graduated with honors from Nanticoke High School in 1952 and earned his Bachelor of Science (cum laude), Master of Education, and Doctor of Education degrees from Pennsylvania State University. His early work as Supervisor of Music in Harrisburg and Mifflintown laid the foundation for his transformational 31-year tenure at Clarion University (formerly Clarion State College), where he built a nationally respected band program.

Stan’s influence was felt both within the music profession and across the broader community. He authored numerous articles on music education, bands, and low brass, and also commissioned and premiered new works for concert band. A proud member of the American Bandmasters Association since his election in 1973, Stan served the organization in many leadership roles, including ABA President and Chair of the ABA Foundation Board of Directors. His fifty-plus years of ABA mentorship, stewardship, and advocacy significantly strengthened the Association and the broader band community.
