The CMA Foundation’s donation to Education Through Music will benefit music education programs in NYC public schools

The presentation of the grant was made Wednesday, September 4 during a press conference at the Best Buy Theater in New York to announce the final nominees for the 48th annual CMA Awards.

“This is our second grant to Education Through Music, and we were delighted to make the announcement in New York and involve the students who are direct beneficiaries of this important initiative,” said Sarah Trahern, CMA chief executive officer. “This program changes lives and we are proud to support a cause that brings music education to the students who need it most.”

“Education Through Music is thrilled to partner with the CMA Foundation to bring music as a core subject to all children,” said Katherine Damkohler, executive director of Education Through Music. “CMA is the perfect partner to help ensure every child receives a quality education, which includes music education.”

The CMA Foundation grant is supporting the full NYC school partner program: direct instruction to kids; training and professional development for music teachers, classroom teachers, school staff, and principals; program evaluation; and materials and supplies for music classrooms.

Education Through Music partners with inner-city schools to provide all students with music as a core subject, and to create school communities that value the arts. ETM’s mission is to promote the use of music in schools as a means of enhancing students’ academic performance and general development. In the upcoming school year, ETM will serve 20,000 students and 40 teachers in 38 inner-city schools in New York City, and their model reaches another 8,000 children through the work of their licensed affiliate organization in Los Angeles. To date, the CMA Foundation has awarded nearly $10 million to organizations that support music education across the United States.
