As you pause from this school year and begin contemplating how you will start the next, remember that the simplest steps often help your students the most! For example, when teaching the concept of cohesive ensemble sound, try giving the students just one listening responsibility at a time, in order of priority:
● Level 1 – focusing on themselves (beautiful, characteristic sound)
● Level 2 – matching the student on either side, the “trio” – (volume, pitch, note length…)
Next, pose questions about what they hear, and have them give the answers. (Are you matching your neighbor? Which instrument is sticking out? Who is playing longer than the others?)
Simplicity + active participation = amazing ensemble results!
