December can feel like the final sprint in a year-long marathon with all the rehearsals, performances, grading, travel, and the emotional weight of wanting everything to end well for everyone you serve. When our plates are overflowing, the default response is to move faster, push harder, and power through, right? But here’s the leadership truth – the moment life gets the busiest is the exact moment we need to slow down and be fully present.
When we slow down, we shift out of survival mode and into stewardship. We reclaim our focus. We reconnect to what we want to create and not just what we’re trying to get through. In this busy season, presence is our superpower. Presence steadies our mind, strengthens our connections, and fuels the impact we desire to make.
Here are 5 Leadership Tips to practice presence when your plate is full.
- Choose your upbeat before you choose your next task.
Take a breath. Set your intention. Focus on the energy you want to bring. Even ten seconds of intentional awareness resets your mindset and helps you lead from clarity instead of chaos.
- Exchange your overwhelming to-do list for purpose-driven priorities.
Ask yourself, “What will make the most positive difference right now?” Choose two action-steps and finish those. When your focus aligns with your purpose, your energy multiplies.
- Create micro-moments of stillness.
Step into the hallway, outside the classroom, or simply pause backstage. A few deep breaths can shift your entire state. Stillness and silence are restorative.
- Set boundaries that honor your well-being.
A full plate requires honest choices. Saying “not this time” protects your capacity to say “yes” with enthusiasm later. Boundaries aren’t barriers; they are commitments to show up at your best.
- Be where your feet are—especially with people.
Slow your pace in conversations. Look students, colleagues, and parents in the eye and listen fully. People feel it when you’re truly present, and most importantly those moments become the memories that resonate.
As we move through the holidays, remember leadership isn’t about how much you can carry; it’s about how intentionally you choose to show up. Slow down. Breathe. Be present. That’s where your joy returns, your clarity sharpens, and your impact grows.
