Position Summary

The KS2 Homeroom Teacher with Music Specialism provides high-quality teaching, learning and pastoral care for an assigned Key Stage 2 class while teaching Music across an agreed Primary timetable. The postholder is accountable for strong pupil progress, an inclusive and purposeful homeroom culture, and a practical, engaging Music curriculum that develops pupils’ knowledge, creativity and confidence. The role contributes to the wider life of RGSPP through performances, ensembles and co-curricular provision, working closely with colleagues and families. The appointment is for a January 2027 start.

Key Accountabilities

• KS2 Homeroom Teaching and Pupil Progress

• Plan and teach well-sequenced, engaging lessons that meet the needs of the assigned KS2 class and reflect the School’s curriculum and expectations.

• Establish ambitious expectations, use evidence-informed teaching approaches and adapt provision so that all pupils can participate and make strong progress.

• Create a positive, well-managed classroom in which pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

• Music Teaching and Curriculum

• Plan and deliver a coherent, practical Music curriculum across the agreed Primary year groups, developing pupils’ skills in performing, composing, listening and appraising.

• Promote confident singing and instrumental participation, ensuring that musical experiences are inclusive, culturally responsive and appropriately challenging.

• Contribute to the review and development of schemes of work, resources and progression in Music.

• Assessment, Reporting and Communication

• Use formative and summative assessment effectively, maintain accurate records and respond to evidence of pupils’ learning.

• Provide clear, timely feedback and complete reports, data submissions and other required records to School deadlines.

• Build constructive relationships with parents and carers, communicating pupils’ progress, wellbeing and next steps professionally and promptly.

• Pastoral Care, Safeguarding and Inclusion

• Take day-to-day pastoral responsibility for the homeroom, knowing pupils well and supporting their personal, social and emotional development.

• Identify and respond appropriately to safeguarding, wellbeing, behavioural and learning concerns, following School procedures and working with relevant colleagues.

• Support pupils with additional learning or language needs through appropriate planning, adaptation and collaboration.

• Collaboration and Professional Contribution

• Work collaboratively with year-group, subject and support colleagues to secure consistency, continuity and high standards.

• Participate fully in meetings, professional development, appraisal, duties, trips, events and other reasonable activities that support School priorities.

• Reflect on practice, respond constructively to feedback and maintain up-to-date subject and pedagogical knowledge.

• Music Enrichment and School Community

• Support and, where agreed, lead choirs, ensembles, concerts, assemblies, productions and other musical events.

• Contribute two after-school clubs or activities each week, including Music provision where appropriate, alongside assigned duties.

• Promote opportunities for pupils to perform and celebrate musical achievement within the School community.

• Resources, Safety and Professional Standards

• Maintain an organised, stimulating and safe learning environment, including the appropriate use, storage and care of instruments and equipment.

• Follow risk assessment, health and safety, copyright, data protection and safeguarding requirements relevant to classroom and performance activity.

• Use School systems and resources responsibly and uphold consistently high standards of professional conduct.

Person Specification

Essential Requirements

• A degree and a recognised teaching qualification, such as QTS or an accepted equivalent.

• Successful experience of teaching in Key Stage 2, with evidence of securing positive pupil progress and wellbeing.

• A relevant Music qualification, or demonstrable specialist musical expertise sufficient to teach high-quality Primary Music.

• Secure knowledge of Primary pedagogy, curriculum planning, assessment and adaptive teaching.

• Ability to teach practical class Music, including singing, listening, composing and performance, with confidence and enthusiasm.

• Strong classroom and behaviour management, organisation and record-keeping skills.

• Excellent spoken and written English and the ability to communicate effectively with pupils, colleagues and families.

• A clear commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, professional learning and the School’s values.

• Confidence in using digital technology to support teaching, communication, assessment and administration.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience of teaching the English National Curriculum or within a British international school.

• Experience of supporting pupils who use English as an additional language or learn in a multilingual environment.

• Experience of leading choirs, ensembles, instrumental groups, concerts or school productions.

• Keyboard or accompaniment skills and/or proficiency on an additional instrument.

• Experience of music technology, notation software or digital audio tools.

• A record of contributing positively to co-curricular provision and the wider life of a school.
