BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Coordinator of Teaching and Learning, Supplemental, the Elementary VAPA
Specialist provides specialized expertise in Dance through the use of the Visual and Performing Arts
(VAPA) Content Standards and Framework for California Public Schools. Supports sequential
standards-based Dance instruction for students. Creates a flexible elementary grade program and a class
environment favorable to learning and personal growth. Establishes effective rapport with students to
motivate them to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for further
participation in the total school program, in accordance with each student’s ability and to meet the VAPA
Content Standards for California in Dance. Establishes good relationships with parents and other staff
members.

ELEMENTARY/JUNIOR HIGH INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC TEACHER
(TRAVELING)
BASIC FUNCTION The Elementary/Junior High Instrumental Music Teacher will provide an educational program at multiple sites in the Santa Maria Bonita School District (K-8); develop in each pupil an appreciation of the art of music; teach techniques instrumental music expression; discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of music; and develop knowledge and skill in listening to and reading music.
The Elementary/Junior High Instrumental Music Teacher is under the direct supervision of and evaluated by the Coordinator of Curriculum and Instruction.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Teach skills in general music appreciation, explorations in music, and in instrumental music (band, other instrumental ensembles as determined necessary), as outlined by the Ca state and National Common Core Arts standards, as adopted by the SMBSD Board of Education.
Develops student musicians from beginning fundamental instrument techniques through increasingly advanced levels of performance.
Utilizes course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
Recruit students in grades 4-8 to instrumental music program
Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school.
Plans a balanced music program, and organizes daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time.
Provides individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
Utilizes repertoire of all types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of pupils.
Controls the storage and use of school owned property; makes music related purchases; makes minor adjustments and requests repairs to instruments as required.
Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals, and music performances.
Evaluates each pupil’s musical growth and performance, assessing each individual’s contribution to the performance of the group.
Plans, rehearses, and directs pupils in musical programs for school and community.
Applies knowledge of national, and state music standards.
Selects and requisitions books, musical instruments, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
Communicates with parents and school counselors and teachers on pupil progress.
Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning challenges.
Cooperates with school administration and district-wide teams in providing musical programs for school productions, district competitions, graduation ceremonies, and civic functions.
Supervises pupils in out of classroom activities during the assigned work day.
Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs and showcases.
Participates in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
Participates cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to participate in the process by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with school guidelines.
Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
CA Single Subject Credential in Music; or CA Multiple Subject Credential with Supplementary Authorization in Music; English Language Learner Authorization ; Highly Qualified
Possess a valid California Driver’s License
