Juilliard415 Welcomes Esteemed Conductors for Fall Performances and Tours

Juilliard415 will welcome William Christie, David Hill, Nicholas McGegan and other esteemed conductors to lead the ensemble this fall. The first west coast tour for Juilliard415 will appear in Berkeley and Palo Alto, CA, as well as the Vancouver Academy of Music.

First West Coast Tour for Juilliard415, Led by Conductor Nicholas McGegan, with Appearances in Berkeley and Palo Alto, California, and at the Vancouver Academy of Music

NEW YORK —- Juilliard Historical Performance, the school’s graduate-level, full-tuition scholarship program for early music, enters its seventh performance season with a full schedule of concerts, tours, residencies, and master classes anchored by performances from its primary period-instrument ensemble, Juilliard415, along with its faculty ensemble Juilliard Baroque, and a roster of distinguished guests artists. Making annual conducting appearances will be William Christie (October 29) and Jordi Savall (January 30). Other esteemed Juilliard415 guest conductors include Pablo-Heras Casado and Nicholas McGegan who will also conduct the Juilliard Orchestra; David Hill; Masaaki Suzuki; and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, who will be making his Juilliard debut (April 29). Juilliard415 will also be conducted by faculty members Robert Mealy and Monica Huggett, violinists; Richard Egarr, harpsichordist; and Dominic Teresi, bassoonist.

Juilliard415, led by conductor Nicholas McGegan, embarks on its first West Coast tour with appearances in Vancouver, British Columbia (November 18-20) followed by Palo Alto (November 21) and Berkeley, California (November 22). The ensemble will be joined by members of Philharmonia Baroque in Palo Alto and Berkeley. The concert in Vancouver is in partnership with Early Music Vancouver and as part of the Music in the Morning series.

Juilliard415 partners with Yale Schola Cantorum and conductor Masaaki Suzuki in an all-Bach program with performances including two of the rarely performed Lutheran Masses in New Haven at St. Mary’s Church on October 17 and in N.Y.C. at Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater on October 18.

In November, Juilliard415 and Yale Schola Cantorum are led by conductor David Hill in Handel’s Dixit Dominus at Yale on November 12, and at the National Collegiate Choir Organization’s Sixth National Conference, held at Portland (Oregon) State University, on November 14.

Lars Ulrik Mortensen, artistic director of Concerto Copenhagen, makes his Juilliard debut on April 29, in a program of works by Muffat and Corelli in Alice Tully Hall.

Free Lunchtime Concerts at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church —- Tuesdays at Twelve

Juilliard Historical Performance continues its free lunchtime concert series, Tuesdays at Twelve, at nearby Holy Trinity Lutheran Church (65th Street and Central Park West, N.Y.C.). The hourlong concerts take place on October 20, December 8, February 16, March 29, and April 26 —- all on Tuesdays at noon —- and feature chamber music performed on period instruments in the 110-year-old church, home of the celebrated Bach Vespers series. These concerts are free, and no tickets are required. The series is an extension of Juilliard’s long-running, free lunchtime performance series that takes place during the school year on Wednesdays in Alice Tully Hall.

Juilliard Baroque

Juilliard Baroque, the program’s faculty ensemble, performs two N.Y.C. concerts in the 2015-16 season —- on September 11 and November 2, both in Paul Hall at Juilliard. The September 11 concert features violinists Robert Mealy and Cynthia Roberts, flutist Sandra Miller, cellist Phoebe Carrai, and keyboardist Peter Sykes in the music of C.P.E. Bach. The November 2 concert features violinist Monica Huggett, flutist Sandra Miller, bassoonist Dominic Teresi, and harpsichordist Avi Stein in an all-Telemann program.

In addition, Juilliard Baroque will be presented by Colgate University in Hamilton, New York, on September 13. Performers will include violinists Robert Mealy and Cynthia Roberts, flutist Sandra Miller, cellist Phoebe Carrai, harpsichordist Jeffrey Grossman, and gambist Sarah Cunningham.

Residencies and Master Classes

Residencies are an important part of the Juilliard Historical Performance program and give Juilliard musicians a chance to work closely with a “who’s who” list of early music specialists. Among the distinguished artists who will be in residencies or giving master classes during the 2015-16 season are Pablo Heras-Casado, Richard Egarr, Kristian Bezuidenhout, Rachel Podger, and Harry Bicket.

Conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, principal conductor of the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in New York and principal guest conductor of Teatro Real in Madrid and Musical America’s 2014 Conductor of the Year, will give a public master class in Paul Hall on October 21.

Richard Egarr, a new member of Juilliard’s faculty and music director of the Academy of Ancient Music, will lead three teaching residencies during the weeks of November 2, January 18, and April 4.

Keyboardist Kristian Bezuidenhout, a frequent guest artist with the world’s leading ensembles, returns for a teaching residency the week of February 23.

Conductor Harry Bicket, music director of The English Concert, gives a public master class on March 14 in Paul Hall as part of Juilliard Historical Performance’s collaboration with The English Concert in America, which offers postgraduate fellowships to select students.
