NOTICE OF FACULTY VACANCY

In Jazz Studies
Beginning August 2022

POSITION: Director of Jazz Studies

RANK & SALARY: Full-time; tenured Associate or Full Professor; rank and salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position requires relocation to Austin, Texas.

QUALIFICATIONS: DMA or Ph.D., but outstanding professional experience will be considered. Experience and accomplishments with advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in curriculum, research activity, and/or culture. A national/international record of excellence as a performer and/or composer. Demonstrated commitment to preparing young musicians for twenty-first century teaching and performing careers via high professional standards, superb pedagogical skills, advocacy and outreach, and active mentoring. Leadership and administrative skills to ensure the successful supervision of the jazz program preferred.

The Butler School of Music is committed to cultivating an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming community and to increasing the diversity of its faculty, students, and curricula. We welcome applicants who can help achieve these objectives.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Lead creative and diverse students and faculty in the pursuit of performing and writing a broad range of improvised music. Actively recruit students and faculty that reflect the cultural heritage of jazz idioms and the population of the United States, and of the world. Direct one of the program’s flagship ensembles. Teach graduate and undergraduate classes and applied lessons in jazz studies as appropriate. Foster the jazz composition program by programming student and faculty works. Select, contract, and host guest soloists and conductors. Maintain a national and international performance and/or scholarship profile in jazz studies. Coordinate the external activities of the program, including tours, recordings, and the annual Longhorn Jazz Festival. Coordinate jazz studies teaching assignments for full-time and adjunct faculty, teaching assistant duties, and cultivate a healthy learning community for faculty and undergraduate and graduate students. Engage in leadership and service activities within the ensembles division, the Butler School and the University.
