Yamaha Corporation of America has chosen California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) graduate Ryan Cheung as this year’s fall wind instruments intern.

Cheung was selected from a national pool of talented and accomplished applicants and has been providing Yamaha with marketing and sales support for its world-class wind products. The three-month internship program will run through December and takes place at the company’s headquarters in Buena Park, California.

Cheung attended Mark Keppel High School, Monterey Park, California from 2010 to 2011. He was the second cellist for the school’s Aztec Orchestra, which performed in numerous musicals and concerts and toured throughout Arizona. He later transferred to San Gabriel Academy in Rosemead, California, and graduated in 2014. While a student there, Cheung volunteered as a student music administrator for the school’s music program within the campus, and volunteered at local church communities in the area.

After graduating from high school, Cheung attended Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California. He was the first and second cellist in the college’s orchestra and participated in several local community philharmonic orchestras, including the International Beverly Hills Orchestra. In 2017, Cheung transferred to Cal Poly Pomona, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Marketing Management. There, he played for the Cal Poly Pomona Philharmonic Orchestra as the second cellist under Dr. Janine Riveire. He also volunteered as a cello tutor at local middle schools and church community groups.

“Ryan’s passion for serving his community with tutor programs and his deep involvement with student orchestras really impressed us and made him a great choice for this program,” says Brian Petterson, senior manager, Winds & Strings, Yamaha Corporation of America. “Ryan has really taken hold of the opportunities that this internship has to offer, and we couldn’t be happier to have him on our team.”
