This is why every month I share Leadership Tips to elevate the level of leadership in your organization. This month, I am turning my normally positive approach on its head and exploring what you should NOT do as a leader.

1. A bad leader controls rather than collaborates. Instead, leaders should strive to inspire, involve their team in decision-making, and empower team-members to play an integral role in the success of where the group is headed.
2. A bad leader diminishes others rather than elevating them. Booker T. Washington famously said, “There are two ways to exert your strength: one is pushing down, the other is pulling up.” Leaders should be promoting and celebrating team members rather than viewing them as competition and a threat.
3. A bad leader is a push-over rather than one who acts consistent with their own values. When a leader bends to peer pressure and compromises their values, they are no longer living in their purpose. Leaders need to stand for something and let their actions represent what they believe.
4. A bad leader talks more than they listen. Leaders who talk more than they listen miss out on hearing what members of their team can contribute and what their concerns may be. When leaders create spaces that encourage listening, their team members will be much more open and express their true and authentic thoughts and opinions.
5. A bad leader doesn’t do what they say they are going to do. Keeping promises and following through is essential to leading with integrity and building trust. When team members lose trust in the leader, it is very difficult to rebuild trust and often leads to a toxic culture and a decrease in motivation, performance level, and joy.
