Before the first lesson, the first rehearsal, or even the first downbeat, you’re already setting a tone.
The beginning of the school year sends a message. What’s your message?
Start with joy, so students learn that your classroom is where they want to be.
Start with clarity, so they feel secure and ready to grow.
Start with listening, so they know their voice matters.
Logistics matter. But the most powerful things you set in motion are the culture and mindset that shape everything that follows.
Ask yourself:
What do I want students to feel when walking into rehearsal?
What do I want them to leave with?
Create a tone with intention, and the rest of the year will follow in rhythm. Your presence and demeanor matter more than your plan.
The first week doesn’t need to be just about setting expectations.
It can be about setting tone for your entire program.
