I love to Fly Fish.
A few years ago I was introduced to fly fishing by my brother-in-law. It wasn’t long before I was hooked (yeah… I went there.)
There’s an artistry, a rhythm, and a pulse to fly fishing. The ideal cast lands the float line gracefully on the surface of the water with the fly gently whipping over the end with a slight ripple as the fly comes to rest on the water.
If the rhythm or pulse of the cast is off, the fly doesn’t land where you want it or with the impact you’re seeking. In fact, a lack of artistry, pulse or rhythm can scare the fish instead of lure them to your fly.
It’s a balance.
Increasing tension with the momentum of the cast. But not too much. That will create a violent splash. Not too little, either. The line will have slack and not enough momentum to follow through.
It’s a beautiful thing when you land that perfect cast. Even better when the trout surges to take the fly. But even if the fish isn’t there, I love the experience. The grace. The beauty.
As you read this, I’m sure you will find a metaphor about being a music director.
