The Juilliard School Releases Juilliard String Quartet App

New App Offers an Insider’s Look at the Juilliard String Quartet Performing Franz Schubert’s “Death and the Maiden” Quartet

NEW YORK –– The Juilliard School announces the release of a new app offering a comprehensive look at the Juilliard String Quartet performing Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810, known as “Death and the Maiden.” The new app—the first for the Grammy® Award-winning Juilliard String Quartet—is the second Juilliard Digital product the school has launched in the past month.

“The new Juilliard String Quartet app allows music lovers to explore one of the pillars of the chamber music repertoire,” Juilliard President Joseph W. Polisi said. “Interactive features built into the app allow the user to direct their own experience, giving music devotees and novices alike the chance to explore this beautifully performed masterpiece on many levels.”

“We hope that the app will enable us to share with music lovers everywhere a deeper understanding of the many  historical,  musical,  and  emotional  aspects  that  highlight  our  relationship  with  this  great  music,” remarked Joel Krosnick, cellist in the Juilliard String Quartet.

Today’s announcement launches the Juilliard String Quartet app worldwide, following a successful release in Asia, where the app debuted at the top of the education charts and as an Apple “Editor’s Choice” top pick. The Juilliard School created the app with Touchpress, the pioneering app developer. It’s available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

The single-download app has many special features, including the ability to highlight individual instruments, a scrolling score, an innovative BeatMap visualization of the music, in-depth commentary, historical context, and multiple camera angles of the performance. There’s also a full performance of Schubert’s song “Death and the Maiden,” upon which he would later base the second movement of the quartet. The song is performed by mezzo-soprano  Avery Amereau, who is currently enrolled  in Juilliard’s  Artist  Diploma  program,  and pianist Brian Zeger, artistic director of Juilliard’s Marcus Institute for Vocal Arts.

The Juilliard String Quartet app is priced at $13.99 and is available from the App Store.
