Marching band remains classified as a performing arts and music education activity rather than an official sport, according to information AOL.ca reported regarding National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) policies. Jordan Morey, manager of communications and media relations at NFHS, stated the organization does not designate these school ensembles as athletic competitions because their primary purpose is musical and artistic performance. Most high school and college programs fall into performing arts departments without the classification of being deemed an official sport.

Despite this administrative distinction, the activity requires substantial physical conditioning. AOL.ca noted that rehearsals and performances involving pivoting, running, and carrying heavy instruments like tubas can involve stamina comparable to cardio workouts. Additionally, Drum Corps International advises members to prepare for five to six hours of intense daily exercise, warning on its website that participants cannot expect to go from couch potato to marching star without prior training or injuries will prevail. While NFHS provides safety guidance and judge training to support these educational programs, the focus remains on artistic execution. Educators and students continue to navigate this dual nature where rigorous physical stamina is essential for success in music education contexts.
