On October 4, 2016, the SABIAN Education Network held an event at Humber College in Toronto, Canada. Attended by an enthusiastic group of local teachers, this was the first such event held in Canada.

SEN’s live events are designed to foster ideas to improve and grow teaching practices, and this event delivered thanks to some of the best-known drummer/educators in Canada. Humber College percussion department chair Mark Kelso discussed challenges in teaching reading and interpretation, Paul Delong suggested ways to prepare students for the real world, Rick Gratton gave an engaging presentation on developing trust with students, and Jeff Salem provided advice on how to get more students and keep them motivated.

Paul Delong, Mark Kelso, Joe-Bergamini, Rick Gratton, Jeff SalemAttendee Matt DelGrosso won a SABIAN 18” AA Apollo cymbal in a random drawing, and all attendees went home with a swag pack designed for educators that is only available at SEN events.

“Having now hosted several of these events, I am looking forward to each one more and more” said event moderator and SEN director Joe Bergamini. “The discussion at these events is intelligent, inspiring, focused, and above all gives the attendees ideas and motivation to become better educators, and to get more students playing the drums.”

SEN is open to all drum educators—from the private home studio teacher with a handful of students to a music school or educational institution—and provides a welcoming and inclusive forum for drum educators worldwide to exchange ideas and share skills.
