Spring Concert time is upon us. For middle schoolers, it’s like “graduation” from this year’s chorus. I use this time of the year to let my students perform fun music. After working hard on MPA pieces, they are ready to sing something they choose. Try taking a day to listen to snippets of music online and let them choose a few songs. For instance, I recently played my new piece, “You Can Fly!” for my Vocal Ensemble and they begged me to do it for the Spring concert. It has a pop feel and is an audience pleaser. If I have done my job right, they will choose quality arrangements, even if non-traditional. Have a little fun at the end of the year, leave your audience wanting more, and attract some new students for next year while you’re at it!
