APRA AMCOS urges decade‑long investment to turn Australian music into global powerhouse

Australia’s leading music‑industry body has lodged a National Cultural Policy submission titled “Made Here. Heard Everywhere,” outlining a ten‑year strategy to elevate the sector to a global creative powerhouse, Limelight magazine reported.

The plan, released by APRA AMCOS, proposes a refundable tax incentive for live‑music venues, festivals and touring artists, a government review of algorithmic barriers that limit Australian music on streaming services, and a national investment strategy for First Nations music, according to Limelight.

Additional recommendations include creating a National Song Academy at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, establishing a National Songbook of iconic Australian songs, and renewing a $180 million, four‑year investment in Music Australia, the source said.

APRA AMCOS chief Dean Ormston described the blueprint as an opportunity to build on recent industry gains, noting the extraordinary quality of Australian music, Limelight noted.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has pledged stronger copyright protections and a new AI regulatory framework, while a state government rebate scheme aims to keep grassroots live‑music venues viable, the magazine added.

Artists and industry groups have urged the Albanese government to push back against Big Tech’s opposition to copyright reforms, and APRA AMCOS will mark its centenary with a ceremony on Aug. 19 at Port Melbourne’s The Timber Yards, Limelight reported.
