A New York proposal to establish a Caribbean steel pan educational music program in New York City schools advanced during the 2026 legislative session. The state Senate’s official record shows S. 6138 moved through the New York City Education Committee and was committed to the Rules Committee on June 5.
The measure would amend state education law in connection with school facilities and the powers of the city school district. The Education Committee approved the bill 7-0 on May 19, according to the recorded vote. The proposal remains active, but it has not become law.
